Collaboration, Education and Inspiration

Signage is the world’s “invisible infrastructure.” It’s a critical component of daily life—guiding people to their destination; allowing spontaneous discoveries of new retail, restaurants, or entertainment; and playing a key role in the ability of a business to attract a customer.

Having an understanding of evidence-based practices in the design, manufacturing, and regulation of signage is extremely important. The Sign Research Foundation develops unique in-person, educational programs that allow for high-level collaboration between diverse practitioners with an interest in the regulation, conspicuity, design, placement, and effectiveness of sign systems.

Planning for Sign Code Success Workshops

The regulations that govern on-premise signs must balance the interests of sign users, neighboring property owners, and the community. City planners and other local officials should consider legal implications, economic development, aesthetics, traffic safety, and the protection and promotion of special areas when developing sign ordinances.

Given this delicate balancing act, planning officials must learn about the regulatory, technical, and policy issues involved in sign regulations. Planning for Sign Code Success™ explores the fundamentals of local sign codes, including common “hot button” issues involving content-neutrality, digital and temporary signs, how to engage community stakeholders, and other issues that will help communities develop beneficial, effective, and enforceable sign regulations.

Attendees can earn AICP CM credits and receive complimentary resources from the Sign Research Foundation on a variety of sign code issues.
