Designers and developers will lead the design and installation of new sign types that will accompany the evolution of the “smart city” (cities which utilize technology to meet current and future needs via data acquisition and IoT (Internet of Things) while allowing for growth and future needs via planning and developed infrastructure). This report seeks to understand the development of smart cities across the globe and to appreciate the importance of citizen participation and social equity in developing the policies which will govern the technologies. The authors chronicle emerging technologies that will shape signage and wayfinding in the near future and provide guidance to the approach cities should take to ready themselves for the role of signs in the future.
